NEW YORK – September 12, 2018 -- Jaye McBride made history this week when she was passed at Broadway Comedy Club, making her the first transgender comedian to be passed into the regular rotation of a major Manhattan comedy club. Although transgender comics perform infrequently at numerous New York City Comedy clubs, no comedy club in Manhattan has ever invited a transgender comic to be part of their regular roster--until now.

Last Thursday night, Broadway Comedy Club Owner Al Martin invited Jaye McBride to audition.  “Jaye was amazing and the crowd loved her,” remarked Martin.  “Our crowd was comprised of fifty-percent New Yorkers and fifty- percent tourists.  Both groups loved her. She killed and that’s my criteria when judging comics.  I ask myself ‘is this comic incredibly funny?’.  Jaye absolutely is. So I immediately passed her into the club.”

Broadway Comedy Club is the first Manhattan Comedy Club to place a transgender comic on their “passed” roster, meaning Jaye will perform on a regular basis at their club. Getting passed into a New York City club is an essential professional milestone and goal for all NYC comics.

“To be honest, I didn’t know that I was the first trans person to be passed in the city.  I kind of suspected as much because I pretty much know every trans comic in the country.  We all know each other, we’re like the Amish,” said McBride.

“I’m very excited to be part of the Broadway Comedy Club lineup but also to be an example to other trans kids to show them that there is a place for us in the world.  I’m not exactly Jackie Robinson, I mean for starters I tell more dick jokes and throw like a girl but I think it’s a huge deal that this club believes in me.  I can’t wait to show them that they made the right call.”

The founders of YAAAS! Fest, NYC’s biggest LGBTQ Comedy Competition, first approached Al earlier this year and recommended Jaye for an audition. “The organizers of YAAAS! Fest told me that she was funny and that Jaye had actually started doing comedy in Upstate New York,” recalled Martin.  “So I called an upstate comedian who told me that Jaye not only performs upstate but also has a big following in Albany and Syracuse. That intrigued me. I thought: “if she is knocking them dead in Upstate New York, I wonder how she would do here in the city?’”

“We were so excited to find out that Broadway Comedy club added Jaye to their regular line up of comics,” said comedian Drew Tessler, this year’s host of  YAAAS! Fest. “We made Broadway Comedy Club the home for YAAAS! Fest because its owner has always proudly showcased comics from the LGBTQ community.  Our YAAAS! Fest Board could not be more excited for Jaye and to partner with Broadway Comedy Club this year.”

About Al Martin and Broadway Comedy Club

Al Martin’s name is synonymous with comedy in New York City, and is responsible for launching the careers of many top comedians working today. Martin’s first venture in the comedy club business was in 1988 when he opened a club in NYC out of a need to help and showcase talented comedians. An accomplished comedian himself, Al was a National Headliner with numerous television credits such as The Joan Rivers Show, Geraldo and Evening At The Improv. Al was always more than just a comedian; he was an activist for the comedy community serving as Vice President of the Professional Comedians Association, and was instrumental in the organization dedicated to bringing health insurance and improving working conditions for comics. Although performing was a love for Martin he found his niche as a comedy club owner. And he soon found himself helping the comedians that he had once worked beside. Al was one of the first club owners to embrace diversity in the comedy world by establishing the first Latino Comedy Night  in NYC. He’s also welcomed to his stage diverse shows, featuring female, gay, urban and Asian comics. In 2000 Martin opened a club in Boca Raton, which he ran successfully until late 2006. With the success of two clubs, Al decided to expand his brand. in 2003, Al opened Broadway Comedy Club, located in the heart of Times Square. Then, in the Summer of 2012, Martin cut the ribbon for Greenwich Village Comedy Club in the heart of Greenwich Village. Broadway Comedy Club is located at 318 W. 53rd St. NY, NY 10019.  212-757-2323.
